The administration and faculty of Seaside High School believe that they have an obligation to provide educational opportunities for every student. Along with the school's commitment, however, is an accompanying obligation for each student to accept responsibility for his/her education. To actively pursue personal learning and to contribute toward the learning of others, each student must attend class regularly and be punctual. The high school attendance system includes important roles for students, parents, teachers, and administrators.

A. Excused Absences: Excused absences are those absences that are due to illness or emergency:
Students should have his/her parents or guardians contact Seaside High School by phone before 8:00am the day of the absence. The school will be open for calls each day, starting at 7:30 am. It is the responsibility of the student to see that this is done. A student returning to school without parent contact must present a note from his/her parent explaining the student absence prior to returning to class. A student failing to have an absence excused by the end of the day will result in discipline. If a student is absent more than one day, the parent or guardian should phone the school each day the student is absent.

B. Prearrange Absences:
     1. One or more school days: Any absence of one or more days that can be anticipated will be excused only if the following procedures are followed:
          a. Student brings a note from his/her parent or guardian stating the reason and date(s) of the absence to the Student Personnel Office.
          b. Student takes the prearranged form to each teacher for his/her homework assignment and signature. Any teacher has the right to recommend, due to possible harm to his/her grade, that the student not miss school for academic reasons.
          c. Student returns completed prearranged request form to Student Personnel Office at least one day in advance of expected absence for administration approval. Each absence is an individual issue and will be treated according to the circumstances on the request.
          d. Students prearranging an absence to leave school prior to the end of a semester grading period will receive an incomplete for each class. Finals must be scheduled for a determined date upon the students return.
           e. Failure to follow this procedure will result in the absence being unexcused per Oregon School Laws (O.R.S. 339.065).

Examples of prearranged absences that are to be handled in this way are: Medical, court appointments, college visitations, family vacations, or any other absence for reasons other than personal illness or emergency. If parent(s) or guardian(s) are going to be away and unable to excuse absence for their child, they should send a note prior to this time, designating who will be responsible for any absence that may occur during this time in order for the student to be excused.

C. School Related Absences:
If a student is absent from class(es) due to a school-related activity (field trip, club competition, athletic events, student government, etc.), they will not be considered absent from their class(es). They will however still be held responsible for all work missed and should attempt, when possible, to have the work completed before missing the class(es). Any teacher still has the right to recommend, due to possible harm to their grade, that the student not participate in the activity for academic reasons. The supervising teacher is notified, as well as the appropriate administrator. If necessary, a conference will be held with the student, teacher, and administrator to discuss the matter academically.

D. Returning from excused absence:
     1.
Notes or phone calls are due the day the students arrive back to school. The note or phone call must verify the reason of absence (illness, or family emergency) to be excused. If the note or phone call is late, the student will be assigned a detention. If note is not received the following day, the absence is unexcused and discipline will be assigned.

     2. Students returning from an excused absence are responsible for seeing their teachers regarding make-up work. Students will have the same number of days to complete make-up work as the number of days they were absent.

E. Unexcused Absences: An unexcused absence includes the following: missed bus or ride, oversleeping, car problems, truancy, failure to check in or out during the school day, failure to prearrange anticipated absence, etc.  Parent or guardian may clear a student absence by phone or send a note with student upon returning to school. Students, who in an attempt to clear an absence, impersonate their parents, or someone, either by phone or note, shall receive an unexcused absence for the period of time in question and shall be subject to the following disciplinary action:

Returning from an unexcused absence:
Students will not be given credit for work missed due to an unexcused absence. Seaside High School does not recognize any type of skip day. Parents shall be advised that such an absence will be considered truancy.

F. Irregular Attendance
Irregular attendance is having eight or more half day absences in any four week period during the time school is in session (O.R.S. 339.065). Being absent more than ten consecutive days will result in a student being withdrawn from school and a truancy letter being written to our truant officer for legal intervention.
